Thief - Gameplay Trailer

Thief producer on being more stealthy than Dishonored

Modern stealth action games typically give the player a choice: do you play aggressively, leaving a wake of bodies behind–or do you play silently, avoiding confrontation whenever possible? Last year’s Dishonored was celebrated for its ability to adapt to playstyle. However, what’s Thief’s approach?

Stephane Roy, senior producer on the game, says the game is meant to be played in a more thoughtful, less aggressive way. “It’s always from the thief’s point of view,” he told us. “If you’re aggressive like a soldier, you’re going to die because the mechanics don’t want to see you going into the light.”

When asked about the player that wants to play commando-style, Roy said that “it’s going to be frustrating for the player.” He gave an example of a recent playtest, one that had a Call of Duty fan trying his luck at the game. “Full of arrows, making headshots–he wasn’t really enjoying the game,” Roy admitted.

Roy says that a key difference between Thief and Dishonored is that the gameplay mechanics sway players away from killing in Thief, while Dishonored uses narrative. “Personally, I think it’s easier to play aggressive than full stealth in Dishonored,” Roy said. “Thief is much more about stealing and not killing.”

Steven Gallagher, narrative director of the game, also chimed in, pointing out that Garrett’s weapon is intentionally crafted to steer players away from running-and-gunning. “You can’t panic with a bow and arrow,” he pointed out. “But you can do aggressive stealth.”

To coincide with our interview, Square Enix also offered three minutes of new gameplay footage. Take a look:

Thief-like The Dark Mod now a free standalone

If you’re still grumbling and griping about the direction Eidos Montreal’s Thief takes the classic stealth series in, or you simply fancy stealing things and knocking men out, give The Dark Mod a bash. Version 2.0 of the first-person sneaker inspired by Looking Glass’s classics today launched, turning it from a Doom 3 mod into a standalone game.

The Dark Mod is about as close as developer Broken Glass Studios could get to Thief without infringing the copyright and risking foxing. It plays essentially the same as the classic games, and is set in a similar gothic-y steampunk-ish world with magic and monsters. It doesn’t have its own campaign, instead relying on oodles of player-made missions which you can download in-game.

As well as going standalone, by replacing every Doom 3 asset it used, v2.0 brings oodles of changes. AI gets a big overhaul, now responding better to sounds, turning towards doors that open unexpectedly, searching for you better, and calling for help. Then there are improvements to character models, heaps of new sounds, better sound propagation, and loads more.

The official website and mirrors are overloaded, so for now you’ll need to download it from a torrent.

“We have spent a tremendous amount of time and energy replacing all the sounds, textures, particle effects, and models that we had been using,” Broken Glass said. “Hopefully this will open up a whole new audience of people who didn’t want to have to purchase a different game in order to try The Dark Mod.”

Here’s a little teaser demonstrating just how welcome the AI improvements will be:

Thief cuts XP system in response to fan feedback

You may have noticed XP popups for murders in Thief gameplay demos and wondered, “What’s up with that?” Why, you may even have posted a comment on this Internet about them! Developer Eidos Montreal has kept an eye on the discontent, and pulled the experience system entirely. Now players will be more reliant upon stealing, which is kind of the point of a Thief game.

“At first, we wanted to outline the progression of the player with XP, but it was reducing our motivation to steal,” game director Nic Cantin explained in a blog post. “The main goal of a thief should be to gain loot. Garrett is already the Master Thief, so we saw no need to have XP as a core mechanic.”

He added, “The E3 reaction was right, rewarding killing like that was wrong for a Master Thief.”

With XP gone, Garrett will rely upon swiping money and treasure to buy new tools, whether they’re to help his sneaking or a little more hostile. Though supposedly you can play through without buying anything, if you fancy a challenge.

“Fans might be surprised how often the devs go to the forum to see how things are perceived in the ‘real world,’” Contin said. “This feedback is extremely valuable to us, so as you can imagine, the consistent reaction to the XP system was something that indicated we needed to revisit some design decisions.”

Thief is due February 25, 2014, on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PS3.

Thief: Next Gen vs. Current Gen Graphics Comparison

https://youtu.be/XHsc7mI9wjA

Cak i to da uradis, i dalje lepse izgleda X1… Sto mi je jako cudno ali istinito…

Pa samo vise tekstura…
