Sony is preparing to launch PlayStation 4 in Japan later this week, but first its issued a fresh tally of worldwide sales without its native country included. As of February 8, the system has crossed 5.3 million units throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, and parts of Asia.
The figure is SCEI’s estimates of sell-through to customers, so actual shipments to stores are likely greater. Just last month, PlayStation 4 sales had crossed 4.2 million systems. PS4 beat out Xbox One in the January NPDs, so surpassing 5 million makes plenty of sense.
The impending Japanese launch will almost certainly goose the worldwide figures again. It’s set to release in that region on February 22.
