Speaking during a recent earnings call, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed that Destiny‘s sequel is aiming to broaden the appeal of the original game by engaging the current player base, old players, and newcomers.
“We’re on track and really excited for what we think is going to be an awesome sequel for Destiny in 2017,” he said. “That sequel is designed to both excite our highly engaged current players but also to broaden the appeal even further, bringing in new fans and bringing back lapsed fans.”
Hirshberg also mentioned that the “incredible demand” for Destiny content meant that Bungie struggled to keep up, leading to content droughts that drove portions of the player base away. Destiny 2 will address this issue by offering a “steady stream of great content” to keep players engaged.
“In the past, I’ve mentioned that the incredible demand for Destiny content has somewhat outpaced our ability to deliver upon that demand,” he added. “Going forward, along with our partners at Bungie, we’ve put together what we believe is a very smart approach that will allow us to deliver that steady stream of great content to keep our players engaged and keep the universe alive and growing in the wake of that sequel.”
We know that Destiny‘s sequel will be coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but rumors have also suggested that a PC version is in the works.
Rise of Iron, which is believed to be the final expansion for Destiny, arrived in September, bringing with it a new raid, a new zone, new Strikes, quests, weapons, armor, and more.
