Borderlands 2 confirmed for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC
**
To be released in the 12 months following April next year****
2K Games has confirmed that Borderlands 2 will be released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC… in the next 21 months.**
The title will once again be developed by Gearbox Software. According to 2K, the game will be released in the twelve months that follow April 1, 2012 - the beginning of parent Take-Two’s financial year.
A 2K release said: "Combining invention and evolution, Borderlands 2 features all-new characters, skills, environments, enemies, weapons and equipment, which come together in an ambitiously crafted story. Players will reveal secrets, and escalate mysteries of the Borderlands universe as they adventure across the unexplored new areas of Pandora.
Environments will be more diverse and enemies will be smarter, says 2K, plus Gearbox is planning an improved mission system “capable of delivering a better story”.
The original cell-shaded art style has been carried over as is and you can see an image of what appears to be the new cover star on this page.
US retailer mag Game Informer’s also released more artwork from the sequel, via its next cover.
Fans and media will get their first look at the game at Gamescom 2011 in Germany from August 17 - August 21, and at PAX Prime (Booth #3417) from August 26 - August 28.
Borderlands 2, starring Salvador the dwarf and a dump of new details
Borderlands 2 is bumpin’ up the brutality with new details, courtesy of the latest issue of GameInformer. Co-op will remain four-player, but the enemy and NPC AI has been revved to support a more interactive environment, with friendlies offering dialogue and bandits carrying weapons unique to their class. Eridium, a new element, will serve as currency and a means of upgrading weapons and vehicles, we assume by duct-taping it to whichever item you wish to improve.
The original Borderlands characters will be NPCs in the Gearbox sequel, but we do have a small amount of details on a new character, the dwarf Salvador, who is pictured above. A Gunzerker, Salvador will be able to dual-wield any weapon, all while sporting a sweet beard. Borderlands 2 will use all new weapons, each designed to fit the personalities of their in-game manufacturers, and the story will feature dynamic missions, making factors such as time critical to your success.
Borderlands 2 is expected to launch in Take-Two’s fiscal year 2013, which begins April 1, 2012. But most importantly, Claptrap will be back, we hope with some new dance moves.
Gearbox have also decided to scrap all of the weapons from Borderlands 1. The randomly generated guns of the first game gave rise to thousands of mad scope/ammo/manufacturer combinations. New manufacturers will bring their own visual twists to each weapon, and players will now be able to add custom decals and enhancements to their favourite pieces.
Of the four new characters, only one has been revealed so far. He’s a stumpy “Gunzerker” called Salvador. He can dual wield any weapon and improve his abilities using the familiar three-branch skill tree of the first game. He’ll be able to choose from a wider selection of vehicles (ie: more than one), and use the new currency, Eridium, to buy new items or upgrade his armoury.
Gearbox also promise greatly improved enemy AI and more varied environments. Also, for better or worse, Claptrap’s back!
Borderlands 2 missions ‘three times bigger in scope’
Gearbox promises a “more dynamic experience” for sequel**
Borderlands 2’s story missions will be “more dynamic” and “three times the scope” of those in the original game, developer Gearbox has promised.**
Game designer Paul Hellquist says the sequel, announced earlier this month, will feature plenty more twists and turns in its mission objectives than the original game.
“The story missions in Borderlands 2 are about three times the scope of a single story mission in the first game. And they twist and turn throughout; your gameplay is changing, your goals are changing… it will be a much more dynamic experience compared to last time.”
Hellquist told US retail mag Game Informer his studio is well aware of criticism of the original game’s story and it’s working to improve the plot for number two.
“Lots of fans and critics gave us the business on the story. When we took a look at what we had done last time, we said, ‘we can do way better than that’,” he said.
“So story has been, from the very first day, one of the most important things that we wanted to improve in Borderlands 2.”
According to 2K, the sequel will be released in the twelve months that follow April 1, 2012 - the beginning of parent company Take-Two’s financial year.
The first Borderlands 2 details arrived via GI last week.
