A developer at Black Tusk Studios, the first-party Microsoft studio tasked with building the next Gears of War game, has posted an image teasing their upcoming installment in the gritty sci-fi shooter franchise.
The photo in question was released by Black Tusk employee Jack Felling and shows an actor in a motion-capture suit holding a plastic replica of the game’s most iconic gun, the chainsaw-bayonetted Lancer. Accompanying the image was a caption revealing that mocap work has officially wrapped for the game.
Though it’s not quite as exciting as, say, a screenshot or trailer for the game, it’s probably a good sign for Gears fans that they’re rolling out any sort of tease at all. Previously, all we’ve really heard about the game was the news it was still in the earliest stages of development last May and that the studio had been “making massive progress” as of December. Though having just finished mo-cap shooting means we’re unlikely to get our hands on the game until 2016 at the very earliest, it’s not out of the question that we might be hearing more about the game before year’s end. Heck, it wouldn’t be too shocking if Microsoft rolled out an early teaser trailer for the game during their E3 press conference, much like they did with Crackdown last year.
For Gears of War diehards, any news will probably be welcome, especially considering how little is known about the sequel. It’s unclear at which point in the Gears timeline this new game will be set, or even whether we can expect to see the familiar faces of Marcus Fenix, Dom, Cole Train, and Baird. Then again, given that the Lancer didn’t get its chainsaw until the war with the Locust was already underway, maybe this image helps narrow things down—at least a little bit.
