Powered by Linux OS, the Atari VCS is slated as a “retro-inspired gaming and entertainment platform” equipped for a “full PC experience for the TV, bringing you streaming, applications, social, browsing, music, and more.” In other words, it’s basically an Xbox One or PlayStation 4, only the Atari VCS will come pre-loaded with classic Atari games, and will support “current titles from a range of studios.” That is, it’s a PC.
How Atari VCS will stand up to other modern consoles and gaming PCs is yet to be seen, however, as it’s reportedly going to cost between $250 and $300. The only real advantage it seems to have is that it runs Linux, meaning computer-savvy customers will have a little bit more wiggle room to customize the VCS as they see fit. We’ll be keeping an eye on the Atari VCS as more information about it surfaces. Until then, we’ll just sit here wondering what the heck Atari is thinking. The best they can hope for is Steam Machine levels of success, right?
