Project Morpheus – official announcement and specs




Tokyo, March 19, 2014 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced the development of “Project Morpheus” (Morpheus) − a virtual reality (VR) system that takes the PlayStation®4 (PS4™) system to the next level of immersion and demonstrates the future of gaming. SCE will continue development of Morpheus looking towards a future commercial launch.

“At SCE we view innovation as an opportunity to build on our mission to push the boundaries of play,” said Shuhei Yoshida, President of SCE Worldwide Studios. “Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we’re looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators.”

Morpheus enables developers to create experiences that deliver a sense of presence – where players feel as though they are physically inside the virtual world of a game. Presence is like a window into another world that heightens the emotions gamers experience as they play. Morpheus features a visor style head-mounted display and works seamlessly with PlayStation®Camera to deliver a unique VR experience right before the player’s eyes. Inertial sensors built into the head mount unit and PlayStation Camera accurately track head orientation and movement so as the player’s head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates naturally and intuitively in real-time. Furthermore, in supporting games, the player can use a PlayStation®Move (PS Move) Motion Controller as an object, such as a sword. Morpheus will reproduce the player’s hands and sword within the game so the player feels like they are physically fighting off enemies with their sword in the virtual world.

Morpheus adopts 3D audio technology uniquely developed by SCE. In addition to sounds coming from front, behind, left and right, Morpheus re-creates stereoscopic sounds heard from below and above the players, such as footsteps climbing up stairs below them, or engine noises of helicopters flying overhead. Sounds that players hear change in real-time depending on their head orientation, creating a highly realistic audio environment within an immersive 360-degree virtual world.

Along with PlayStation Camera, Wireless Controller for PS4, and PS Move, Morpheus will deliver immersive breakthrough entertainment experiences to gamers through the PS4 system, leveraging SCE’s expertise across key areas for VR – including display/optics, audio, tracking, control, ease of use, and content.

Developers will be able to create Morpheus content for PS4, a platform which has sold over 6 million units only after 3 months and a half of its launch, and is continuing to show strong momentum. The Morpheus dedicated SDK is currently under development and will become available when ready.

During the Game Developers Conference 2014 held in San Francisco from March 19 through March 21, attendees can visit the Sony Computer Entertainment America booth to have a hands-on experience with Morpheus, which will be exhibited for reference. Attendees can enjoy exclusive technology demo such as EVE Valkyrie (CCP), a multiplayer dogfighting shooter that uses virtual reality to give the player the sense of being a real pilot in an EVE Online spaceship, Thief (SQUARE ENIX Co., LTD.), which allows players to explore the dark shadowy world of the stealth action title, “The Castle” (SCE) that shows various VR interactions utilizing PS Move, and “The Deep” (SCE), where players can observe the waters from inside a shark proof cage

U pitanju je PROTOTIP DEVKIT koji ce biti slat developerima uskoro sa imenom Project Morpheus koji u startu cilja da ponudi najbolji moguci tech za prikaz VR-a. Pokusace da vec sa prvim modelom dostignu “presence”, stanje u kojem nas mozak misli da ono sto nase oci vide je stvarnost. Pravi 3D prikaz koji prekriva nase celo vidno polje, nema ivica, nema “ekrana”, ceo gameworld je prikzan ispred svega sto nase oci vide i to omogucava da veoma brzo pocnemo da osecamo da se zaista nalazimo UNUTAR igre. Da bi ovo dostigli, tracking lag pomeranja headseta mora biti jako mali, ekran mora biti jako brz, rezolucija mora biti dovoljna [devkit ima 1080p ekran], i kontrole upravljanja i zvuk moraju da odgovaraju. Plan Sony-a je da za sada razdeli ovaj devkit developerima, a da proidaja krene “sto brze i sa sto manjom cenom”. Finalni oblik i hardver od headseta koji ce moci javno da se kupi naravno nije jos totalno finalizovan, ali i ovo sto je Sony sada spremio je veoma, veoma dobro.

Bice vise vesti o ovome tokom danasnjeg dana kada ce novinari i devleoperi moci da isprobaju demoe. Za sada oni koji su imali sansu da isprobaju ovo su rekli da je Project Morpheus bolji od Oculus Rifta.

God of War showcased in VR on PS4**

Sony has showcased its God of War franchise running in virtual reality (VR) at the its Game Developers Conference (GDC) Presentation in San Francisco. The demo was reportedly a first-person showcase that put players in the shoes of series protagonist Kratos. A violent demonstration of what was possible in VR then followed on, with the hero slashing up enemies in a typically gory fashion.

The presentation was headed up by Sony’s Shuhei Yoshia, who noted that “When I looked down, I saw my body was that of Kratos. It was an empowering experience.”

This doesn’t necessarily confirmed God of War is coming to the PlayStation 4 with VR. The demo was meant to illustrate what will be possible with Sony’s newly announced PS4 VR headset, Project Morpheus. VRFocus will continue to follow the latest on the headset and a possible_ God of War_ title and report back with any developments.

Ja sam procjenio oko 300$ cjenu, Wahad misli da ce cjena biti konkurentna Kinectu, tj oko 100$. Ako bi bila ta cjena, onda nema vise sta da se prica, uzima se odmah

Pre ce tvoja procena biti tacna jer kinekt je samo malo naprednija kamera dok je ovo VR sistem.
Cena ce biti otprilike kao za Oculus, dakle oko 300$.
Sad, da li vredi toliko ili ne, to je subjektivno. Ko je u tom fazonu, uzece.

Ne bi me cudilo da MS pravi VR naocare, koliko vec oculus rift postoji MS je mozda i dill napravio pogotovu sto vole tidje ideje da kradu svi pa cak i MS.

Meni se svidja ova ideja sa naocarima i igranjem crazy :slight_smile:

Kinect je staro MS ce izbaciti jos nesto novo 100% inovacije prodaju uredjaje kada prodaja opadne. :wink:

MS ce mozda gurati onaj Fortaleza koncept, ali ne znam koliko ce moci da se poredi sa ovim. A i sam Kinect 2 nije bas podesan za brz i precisan tracking, 30fps refresh ce da ga koci.

300$ najverovatnije, ne smeju preko toga. Ali ce za tracking traziti i kameru i/ili Move za neke igre.

zdravkelja, u pravu si. Moci se i preko DS4 ali ce biti jadno u poredjenju s kamerom pa ce morati da se uzme i ona.

Inace, cela ta VR prica moze da bude interesantna.
Imao sam ja drevni VFX1 koji je imao rezoluciju 320x200/2, odnosno 160x100 po oku.
Pa ipak sam mogao da se uzivim jer se jednostavno utopis u svet. A sa fullHD ekranima, pa cak i manje od toga, malo me strah i da zamislim.

U principu, najveci problem u celoj stvari je mucnina. Mozak buni razlika izmedju onoga sto vidis i onoga sto radis, i tu nastaje problem. Npr. u igri se tumbas u letelici, a ovamo sedis mirno na kaucu.

Ma ja sam tako srecan - ovo je pravi napredak, a ne vece rezolucije na tv-u! Sad kad vidimo da su i veliki igraci krenuli ozbiljno da ulazu u sopstvene produkte, imamo najzad realnu sansu da VR zazivi.

A sto se Oculusa tice, odusevljava me kakva se tu grupa ljudi okupila. I sto Valve otvoreno s njima saradjuje, zvuci mi kao da stvarno imaju zelju da ovo uspe zato sto je fantasicno.

Verujem da sada pola vrha MS gaming divizije razmislja o promeni karijere.

U principu, najveci problem u celoj stvari je mucnina. Mozak buni razlika izmedju onoga sto vidis i onoga sto radis, i tu nastaje problem. Npr. u igri se tumbas u letelici, a ovamo sedis mirno na kaucu.

Uf, opasan dealbreaker za mene.

Ipak, progres je neumoljiv… Evolucija ce za nekoliko hiljada godina proizvesti savrseno tehno-adaptirane homo sapiense, debele i skoro nepokretne ali savrseno adaptirane na kacige. :smiley:
