PlayStation 4 reserves 3.5GB of its 8GB GDDR5 memory for the operating system, leaving 4.5GB of space for game code, according to current PlayStation 4 documentation shown to Digital Foundry by a well-placed development source. However, further sources suggest that an additional 1GB of “flexible memory” may be reclaimed from the OS reservation, based on availability.**

Sony’s internal docs say that 4.5GB is the baseline amount of guaranteed memory available for game-makers (note the memory usage of the Killzone: Shadow Fall demo) and most likely what the lion’s share of launch titles will be using. However, other sources close to Sony indicate that developers can request up to an additional gigabyte of “flexible memory”, and use it to boost elements of the game - but only if the background OS can spare it. We’re told that incorporating this isn’t trivial, and it may well be that to begin with only first-party developers target its usage.

Current PlayStation 4 dev kits have a “Game Memory Budget Mode” in the debug settings featuring two options: normal and large. The normal mode setting confirms that 4.5GB of memory is usable for game applications. The large mode increases this considerably to 5.25GB, but the docs are clear that the extra RAM here is only available for application development, presumably in order to house debugging data. From what we understand, the extra gig of flexible memory appears to work in addition to these allowances.

The news that the PS4’s OS reservation is in the same ballpark as Xbox One’s equivalent 3GB allocation is sure to surprise many, especially bearing in mind that previously leaked Sony docs have only spoken of a 512MB allocation for the system software - though this information hails from the era where the new PlayStation was slated to ship with only 4GB of memory.

There are many parallels with the Xbox One. Both consoles allocate two Jaguar CPU cores to the operating system, and what sounds like a disproportionately higher level of RAM than one might expect - especially in comparison to PC, where Windows operates perfectly well with less than a gig of memory at its disposal. However, in a world where even the Wii U reserves 50 per cent of its onboard RAM for the operating system, the big bump in PS4’s OS allocation is perhaps not completely surprising. The console’s leap from 4GB to 8GB has seemingly opened the door for Sony to be much more ambitious about what tasks the PlayStation 4 performs in the background and in parallel with gameplay.

Microsoft has already showcased Xbox One’s abilities in this regard, but our sources say that PlayStation 4 is also capable of similar feats, perhaps in a manner more closely resembling that of PS Vita - the game is paused, apps are switched over seamlessly and, once exited, gameplay continues without having to restart the code. The convenience and functionality is undeniable, but it comes at a cost to memory consumption.

As it stands, both next-gen consoles will launch with 8GB of unified memory, but with a significantly diminished amount actually available to games developers. However, a big area of difference between Sony and Microsoft’s approaches to OS allocation could come in their future plans for the reserved RAM. A Microsoft insider tells us that the engineers behind the Xbox One specifically chose 3GB in order to allow the background platform to evolve over a ten-year life-cycle - it’s very hard to add features if the pool of available RAM is reduced from its initial level. The reserved RAM allocation there is set in stone, and is unlikely to change.

However, sources close to Sony suggest that the PS4 approach is perhaps more flexible - the current allocation in terms of both CPU cores and memory could be reduced once the operating system is complete and then streamlined. In short, while there is no guarantee of change in the future, Sony is at least leaving the door open to the opportunity and the R&D team has experience in reducing the OS footprint - just as it did on PlayStation 3.

In the here and now, the template is now set for the next-gen launch period, and the focus from both platform holders is that while games command the majority of system resources, supplementary services and apps are clearly very important indeed. Microsoft has already set out its stall in this regard - now it remains to be seen what additional features PlayStation 4 brings to the table above and beyond its core gaming functions.

Čudi me da ovo još nije postavljeno. Za sada nije 100% potvrđeno, ali očekuje se uskoro da saznamo šta je u pitanju.

Veoma zanimljivo. Jos ako MS stvarno promjeni svoju RAM memoriju, onda imamo potpuno jednake konzole, mislim da malo jaci takt procesora nece da pravi bitniju razliku.

Ali stvarno mi nije jasno sta planiraju da urade sa tom konzolom i OS-om, da li ce moci da spremi rucak kad ce da dobije 3GB (ili 3.5 GB)?

pa upalis kao digitron, nastavis danas ono sto si stao juce, multitasking download + igranje, igranje na pola skinute igre, stream, recording, uploading, sharing, itd itd…

Jbm li ga, sada to Win7 radi sa 1GB. Ako ne zavrsava rucak i kafu, bicu veoma razocaran :smiley:

Korisno informativan topic, malo pre sam citao clanak na dashhacks, svakako ovaj je potpuniji i detaljniji. Joj imam osecaj da MS budzi konje na svom novom autu, strasno sta moze da ispadne od toga. Kao prvo mogu da naprave takve hardwareske probleme i failove i to moze biti dobar ekonomski samar. Playsatation pokazuje da im je stalo do “pro gamer” populacije i da misli na sve, ova bitka izgleda 50:50, priblizne konzole. Informacije, informacije a nigde izcurelog hardware-a, ukradeno iz fabrike i slicno :slight_smile:

Pa gle ja sam tako i ocekivao iz prostog razloga sto gotovo svi znamo kako sony stoji s optimizacijom hardwarea i svog os-a.Kao sto je netko rekao konzole ce biti gotovo indenticne sto se tice snage eh sad optimizacija je druga prica,ali ne mogu vjerovat da im os toliko zauzima pa XO ce imati tri os-a pa ce biti 5GB slobodno s time da xo ima DDR3,ali se vec prica da bi ju mogli zamjenit

Bice opet nereseno, samo sada jos blize nego prosli put. Budalastina stvarno. Razlikovace se samo po ekskluzivama i po kojoj sitnici.
Pc ce i dalje biti majka gejminga a konzole ce u stvari biti pc tako da svarno nema poente.

Znači, svo ovo prepiranje i banovi su bili uzalud?!! Pu pu :frowning:

Moguće je da je Sony samo “rezervisao” deo RAMa za buduće update i servise. Ako vreme pokaže da toliko mesta nije potrebno, to jest ako sabiju OS onda mogu polako “oslobađati” taj RAM za developere. Isto važi i za XB1. Realno, u ovom trenutku i narednih godinu dve, sigurno neće biti potrebne za više memorije od 4-5GB, verovatno ni toliko. Nakon toga možemo očekivati da apetiti skoče, ali je bitno da se trenutno developeri ne žale da obe mašine imaju malo memorije. Kod konzola je bitna optimizacija i streaming sa raspoloživim, a barem memorije i HDDa u ovom slučaju ima dosta. Za Sony bi veći problem bio da od početka stavi na raspolaganje nekih 7GB i za neke dve godine, npr, odluče da uvedu neki ključni servis koji se pojavi kod XB1 ili Steamu a nemaju prostora ili resurse za tako nešto.
Jedino gde nas ovo dovodi, ako bude potvrđeno, da će multiplatform igre izgledati jednako a da će poneka ekskluziva pokazati šta konzola može. Što se pre naviknemo na to, manje ćemo se razočarati kasnije.

    I ovo sa optimizacijom je sad druga stvar…sta nisi citao kolko treba da naprave igru za ps4…onaj govor od marka cernya ?
    I tesko da je istina jer je ps4 trebao imati 4gb gddr5.
    Moje misljenje je da nema razloga da koristi vise od 2gb kao sto je i pouzdani izvor na neogafu rekao…a i mozda zato ps4 moze 15 minuta snimat gameplay a xbox 5.

Windows odavno vec ‘‘tera’’ 16 gb radne memorije… Odavno.Sto jednostavno ne ubacise 16 gb i reseni svi problemi?Koliko bi to realno podiglo cenu konzole? 15%?

Ako je PS3 ovoliko terao sa 256mb, mislim da je 8GB GDDR5 sasvim dovoljno za sledeću generaciju.

Pa sto onda ‘‘rezervisu’’ i taj 1gb? Developeri su oduvek kukali na manjak radne memorije, i da je to razlog sto nisu mogli da ostvare svoje ‘‘umetnicke domete’’…
Pa daj im onda 16 gb pa da vidimo sta ce da urade …
3,5 gb za operativni sistem?! Sta sad ovo znaci , konzola postaje komp?
Konzola za igranje komp za sve ostalo.Tako bese u zlatno doba, a sad…
Ne dopada mi se nikako u kom smeru ide sve ovo …

Developeri uvek kukaju kako nemaju dovoljno resursa da bi uradili išta, i time pokušavaju da se vade iz goana jer su zasali stvar. Da zaista imaju hrabrosti, onda bi rekli: Dosta je, nećemo praviti igre za vas, jer su vaše konzole preslabe, kao što većina radi za Wii U. A i šta je falilo recimo Tomb Raideru? Igra je jako dobra sa “tako malo” resursa, a da ne spominjem ekskluzive, a onda pogledamo igre poput AC3, koje su imale problema od starta, jer su LOŠE urađene i optimizovane, a ne zbog manjka resursa. To je kao kad političari u Americi krive video igre za masakre. Samo se traži neko ili nešto čemu može da se svali krivica.

Tako i ispada…Gledam bas reviews igara za sve platforme po raznim sajtovima…Najjace ocene dobijaju igre sa indie scene,koje bi mog’o da potera i mob tel star par god…Pikselizovane igre sa dobrom idejom dobijaju odlicne ocene…Manjak kreativnosti i dobrih ideja, to je najveci problem gaming industrije danas, cini mi se…

Poenta bese maksimalna optimizacija ‘‘slabasne’’ konzole za igre, stoga igre izgledase isto kao i na visestruko jacem pc-ju…
A sada dolazimo do obrnute situacije…Optimizacija konzole za streaming, live tv, game recording, operativni sistem… ?!
Ma sto neko ne izadje sa novom konzolom i kaze:
‘‘Imamo konzolu iste jacine kao ps4 i XO, s’tim sto je max optimalizovana samo za igre.Imamo ‘‘fabricki’’ softver sa osnovnim funkcijama, nemamo live tv, facebook ni twitter… al imamo igre koje ce lepse izgledati i bolje raditi nego na ps4 i XO. Za sve ostalo imate komp od 100e, da vam zavrsi sve druge poslove.Period.’’
Mislim da bi takva konzola unistila XO I Ps4.

Konzole su odavno mnogo vise od kutije koja sluzi da pusti igru. Ali za razliku od PC-ja, makar su svi servisi namenjeni igranju i multimediji.

Btw, u prethodnih nekoliko dana drasticno su skocile cene memorije na globalnom trzistu.

Eh kada se setim 1998 godine Cyrix procesor veran osakacen klon pentima I (jbg) sa 32MB RAM-a a tada komsije imale za 8MB 486 i 16mb pentiume… I bilo dovoljno i igrao little big adventures 2: twinsen’s odyssey. Sada sve ram sve neki clockovi sve neke ultra giga magistrale i za OS kazu tako nesto, siguran sam da ce im sistem zauzimati 1GB RAM-a maksimum 2GB, price su samo to a oni se foliraju.

Da, namenjeni su …Live streaming interactive tv…Ne znam kako bi igrao igru bez takvog jednog servisa…A i bez twitera, Boga mi …
Kad se samo setim pocetnog menija prvog ps one-a…

Ako mene pitas to je sve sto je potrebno jednoj konzoli…
(ok, jedino jos online multiplayer, iako ga ja ne upraznjavam , razumem da ljudi imaju potrebu).
Ali sistem da zauzima 3,5 gb?!
Ima da pokrenem emulator i ponovo da igram Rezident 2, MGS M1, Syphon Filter , Fear Effect, Abe, i da uzivam…

Mislim da je to vestacki izazvano, prave nove konzole u milionskim primercina, prodali sav lager chipova ms i sony, e sada za PC gamere malo veca cena sve to ima neku zaledjinu i pravi uzrok.
